In his play Dark Pink, turkish playwright and translator Erdem Avşar raises a vexed issue
‘How can I avoid a beating without beating someone else up first?’ asks himself Mehmet, the
main character of the play, who is strongly determined never to use violence and
categorically refuses the force of the arms.
If you use violence against bullying, “the kids would bring more bullies... and it would never
end. Like the armies” So, how can a boy stop all this? “He talks to them” Mehmet answers “
It is through a peer mediation program that we can intervene, develope a culture of
democracy and dialogue through which we will create a safe and collaborative environment
and, should a conflict arise, face it and resolve it in a peaceful way.
A teenage peer will understand peer problems better. because he knows how to
communicate with teenagers, will understand the relational dynamics and act in the right
way. If he is given the right skills, if he has the right tools, if an empowerment approach is
used a peer mediator will be more effective than a teacher when dealing with a bullying
case or a t een dispute, with relevant and positive educative effects. ‘How can I avoid a
beating without beating someone else up first?’. There is a solution, but we can’t wait for it
to come from heavens, like a deus ex machina usually does. We must find this solution
through active participation. This is the main purpose of the manual: give the help needed to
find it.
